MONTREAL ARTIST SELECTED BY CHINESE EUROPEAN ART CENTER FOR

ARTIST IN RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Leading Art Material Supplier Liquitex to Support Françoise Issaly’s Two-Month Residency in Xiamen

MONTREAL, QUEBEC (March 11, 2015) – In a rich cultural exchange, Montreal-based artist Françoise Issaly will learn to fuse the time-honored traditions of Jianzhi, or Chinese paper-cutting, with her artistic expression during a two-month Artist in Residency Program at the Chinese European Art Center (CEAC) in Xiamen this summer. Backed by leading acrylic art-material supplier Liquitex, Issaly is one of six international artists chosen monthly to study and work within the residency program. From July 1 through August 30, Issaly will collaborate with local and international artists at the CAEC to explore Chinese paper-cutting and pattern creation. She will intermix Liquitex acrylic paints, string gels and pouring mediums to create a distinguished new body of work that will be unveiled at a closing exhibit.

“Françoise is an accomplished abstract artist known for her distinct multi-layered approach, so we were very excited to hear that she is interested in exploring the heritage and skill of Chinese paper-cutting in Xiamen. Liquitex products offer distinct intermixable qualities that are ideal for Issaly’s approach and artistic interests. As a brand that supports emerging and professional artists from across the globe, we look forward to supporting Françoise’s artistic and cultural journey at the CEAC,” commented Jimmy Leslie, resident artist at Liquitex, Winsor & Newton and Conté à Paris, and director of the brands’ art education program, The Fine Art Collective.

A participating artist in The Fine Art Collective with more than 20 years of professional experience, Issaly is renowned for her abstract painting and drawing, as well as her installations and photography. The serial and cumulative approach to her work incorporates multiplication, superimposition and repetition and creates a visual space where various realities overlap. Dream-like images in which the figurative and formal meld together are signature to the artist.

A resident of Montreal since 1993, Issaly was born in the south of France, studied in Montpellier and received her Masters of Fine Art in Bordeaux. She has taught at The Montreal Fine Art Museum, The Visual Art Center and the University of Montreal, and has exhibited her work in galleries throughout Canada, California, Maryland, Vermont, Germany, France and Malaysia.

A nonprofit and non-commercial art space, the CAEC plays an integral role in supporting southern China’s cultural landscape. It welcomes international artists who work in the visual arts, design, architecture, literature and music, and offers them the resources, partnerships and tools to create new art in Xiamen.

During her two-month artist in residency in Xiamen, Françoise Issaly will document her work, artistic process and experiences in a journal which later will be published as a book. At the end of her residency, she will exhibit her work at the CAEC.
