My work is based on series, patterns, recurrences, and the use of abstract forms.

In 2018, I started a new series of drawings and paintings in which I use traditional Buddhist and Chinese iconography to create abstract compositions. These compositions use vibrant colours, in a joyful and playful setting, particularly with the use of the “Happy cloud” patterns.

Inspired by Thangka painting backgrounds in which we find abstracted representations of nature and landscape elements, I extract these elements from their original context and combine them into non narrative abstract compositions.

In this series, I explore how the mind re-create a sense of familiarity beyond the original cultural context.

About my In the Clouds Series:

My work is based on series, patterns, recurrences and the use of abstract forms.

When I moved to china in 2018, I started to work on a new series of drawings and paintings in which I use traditional Buddhist and Chinese iconography to create abstract compositions.

Thangka painting backgrounds are made with coded and abstracted representations of nature and landscape elements, each having a precise meaning and place in the overall composition. I extract these elements from their original context and combine them into non narrative abstract compositions.

I am interested in patterns and question the perception of shapes and symbolism when used outside of an original intended setting. I explore the mnemonic effects in the narrative /non-narrative of forms and language while playing with positive and negative space in the structure of my compositions.

Where is the meaning when the meaning is obliviated? How does the mind re-create a sense of familiarity even outside its own cultural background?
